Where we were
The Medicine Hat Photography Club has a rich history.
A camera club formed in 1906 and met weekly. A camera club founded in the mid 1950s functioned into at least the 1970s. At one point, there were two clubs, one being a darkroom club. Those clubs joined, and eventually all members transitioned to digital. In 2006, The Medicine Hat Photography Club was officially incorporated as the Medicine Hat Photographic Society. Peaking at approximately 75 members, activities were varied and included large gallery shows, presentations, guest speakers, photo marathons, field trips, and workshops. Joint ventures with other clubs were enjoyed as well; like a book project completed with a writer’s club. Members would also individually organize gatherings amongst themselves as events presented, such as rodeos, fairs, local sports. Friendships were formed, barbecues were attended, and the club kept active. Levels always ranged from beginner to advanced, as well as interest varying in both subject and style.
The club experienced a shift due to unforeseen circumstances; the club also experienced challenges associated with lockdowns. Numbers and participation dwindled. But the heart of it clearly kept beating.

Where we are
The start of the club’s year, September 2024, brought changes within the board of directors, the club welcomed new members, and the club joined the Alberta Camera Club Alliance.
Meetings take place monthly, and much is packed into the time together. A technical presentation, a creative presentation, a themed photo contest, a video presentation highlighting members’ recent photos, time for questions and feedback, coffee, and visiting.
The ACCA gives the club opportunities to connect with other clubs and participate in guest speaker events.
The club has one organized field each month, these have included a day trip to Waterton to capture wildlife, landscape, and nature, an evening at Red Rock Coulee practicing astrophotography, an afternoon at the Medalta photographing a variety of things in a variety of light.
A gallery, hosted by Café Verve once a year, gives members the opportunity to have an image printed and displayed.
Members share to social media, ask questions, practice for photo contests, and invite one another to public local events of interests.

Where we are going
Forward.
We are navigating the road for the club to grow and its members to flourish. To offer opportunities in connection, and to foster creativity. To have fun, and to be challenged. To develop skill and try new things. To help one another, to support one another. To participate in local events producing a solid reputation, to give back to the city. To be a space where photographers young and old, amateur and master, can learn and teach, receive and share.
-
The club is growing in number and active participation, we may soon need a larger space to hold meetings. It’s a good problem to have!
-
The board is considering ways for the club to give back to the community.
-
Encouraging members to integrate themselves beyond monthly attendance. To give a presentation, write an article, share images, share experiences, to teach, to ask questions, to offer feedback.
-
Expanding the club’s online presence. Social media, a website, as well as increasing engagement on social media.
